background and aims: ankylosing spondylitis (as) is an idiopathic chronic inflammatory disease mainly involves sacroiliac and axial joints; but it may also have extra-articular involvement. accordingly, this study was designed to determine the frequency of cardiac involvement among patients with ankylosing spondylitis. methods: this study was performed as a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional survey. in this study 50 consecutive patients with as and 40 normal healthy subjects were enrolled and compared for cardiologic manifestations. results: the frequency of cardiac involvement was similar between as patients and normal subjects (p>0.05). however, there was significant difference between 2 groups in point of mitral valve prolapse and mitral regurgitation (p

Cardiac Involvement in Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is one of the subgroup of diseases called "seronegative spondyloarthropathy". Frequently, it affects the vertebral colon and sacroiliac joint primarily and affects the peripheral joints less often. This chronic, inflammatory and rheumatic disease can also affect the extraarticular regions of the body. The extraarticular affections can be ophthalmologic, cardiac, pulmonary...

Urolithiasis in ankylosing spondylitis: Correlation with Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI), Bath ankylosing spondylitis functional index (BASFI) and Bath ankylosing spondylitis metrology index (BASMI)

Background: Increased incidence of renal stone has been reported in ankylosing spondylitis (AS), but unlike some well-known renal involvements, they have not been fully studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of AS with urolithiasis and also the relation between urinary stone and severity markers. Methods: One hundred-sixty three AS patients were included in a cross-s...

Ankylosing spondylitis--cardiac manifestations.

There is a definite association of heart disease with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The magnitude of this relationship is less clear. Three types of inflammatory affections can be differentiated: 1. aortitis and aortic insufficiency with the possible necessity of cardiac surgery, 2. conduction disturbances of the atrioventricular node with a probable subsequent indication for a pacemaker and 3. ...

Aortic involvement in ankylosing spondylitis.

Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) may develop cardiovascular manifestations ranging from asymptomatic forms to life threatening conditions. The most important cardiovascular manifestation of AS is aortitis, which frequently involves the aortic root and the ascending aorta leading to valvular insufficiency. The extension of the subaortic fibrotic process into the interventricular septum ...

Pulmonary involvement in ankylosing spondylitis.

Thirty two patients with ankylosing spondylitis were investigated with a set of pulmonary function tests and the results compared with those for a control population. The patients had no complaints about lung symptoms and their chest radiographs were normal. The main pathological findings were reduced lung volumes, a raised closing volume/vital capacity ratio, and a decreased volumic airway con...
